Editor's Synopsis
The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) at Oxford highlights its research into Human-AI Collaboration (HAIC), an emerging field focused on how humans and AI systems can work together to achieve outcomes that surpass what either could accomplish alone. In HAIC systems, the AI can serve as an assistant, peer, or tutor to the human, requiring capabilities such as explainability, safe and responsible functioning, and an understanding of how to interact effectively with human users.
The research also emphasizes the importance of studying how human behavior changes in response to HAIC systems. The team, led by Alison Noble and Konstantinos Kamnitsas, is developing imaging-focused HAIC methods and systems to support healthcare applications. This work sits within the broader Biomedical Image Analysis group at IBME, connecting technical AI themes with clinical and translational goals.
