Editor's Synopsis
UC San Diego highlights nine breakthroughs across health, climate change, and art that have been made possible through artificial intelligence. In health care, AI is driving advances ranging from uncovering a hidden genetic trigger for Alzheimer's disease to accelerating tuberculosis drug discovery with a tool called MycoBCP, non-invasive heart monitoring, improved breast cancer radiotherapy planning, real-time muscle activity tracking via flexible ultrasound patches, and enhanced retinal diagnostics at the Jacobs Retina Center.
On the climate front, researchers developed Spherical DYffusion, a generative AI model that projects 100 years of climate patterns in just 25 hours โ 25 times faster than traditional supercomputer simulations. Meanwhile, the ALERTCalifornia and WIFIRE programs leverage a network of over 1,200 monitoring cameras and AI-powered predictive models to help emergency managers detect wildfires, plan evacuations, and even monitor post-fire hazards like landslides.
In the arts, artist and assistant professor Memo Akten created "Superradiance. Embodying Earth," a multiscreen video and sound installation combining dance, poetry, neuroscience, and generative AI to explore humanity's interconnectedness with the planet. Exhibited at Birch Aquarium, the work exemplifies Akten's philosophy that AI is not a substitute for creativity but a collaborative tool for probing deeper questions about reality, life, and consciousness.
